Our
Story

Let Lahaina Rebuild is a coalition of Lahaina homeowners, commercial landowners and business owners that lost their property and much more in the devastating Lahaina fire. As fire victims, we only want to rebuild what we had as quickly as possible so we can move on with our lives. February 8th marks the 18-month anniversary of the fire and most of us are facing seemingly insurmountable barriers to rebuilding and recovery.

Many of us owned coastal homes and businesses where the Maui County government is reluctant to let us rebuild. Some see our tragedy as an opportunity to reimagine Lahaina in new ways. In fact, the Maui County Planning Department has developed a long term plan for Lahaina that spends the first two years developing a plan that does not explicitly include a plan for us to rebuild our coastal homes and businesses, but can easily block our progress. Supporting Lahaina fire victims is not mentioned in either the short term or long term initiatives, or in the executive summary. Although many of us participated in the process, our voices are not represented in the plan. We need your help. If you support our efforts, please join our group. Your written and oral testimony to county and state officials is incredibly powerful. Individually we don't have a voice but together we will be heard. Things are moving very quickly and there are many initiatives underway that need your comments and guidance. Please revisit this page often to see current and upcoming opportunities for your participation and join today to get emails notifying you of important activities and deadlines.

Mahalo for your kokua,

Events

Maui County officials are making decisions every week that determine the future of Lahaina. We must actively participate in order for our voices to be heard. Please begin commenting, testifying and attending the biweekly meetings of the Maui County Council (first and third Friday of the month) and the Maui Planning Commission (second and fourth Tuesday of the month). These meetings are held at 200 South High Street in Wailuku on the 8th floor. Please check the county calendars weekly for published agendas, meeting time updates and opportunities to comment. The published agendas contain all the links you need to materials, meeting information and how to comment.

About Let Lahaina Rebuild

Let Lahaina Rebuild was formed because Lahaina town home and business owners are not being able to simply rebuild what they had where they had it. Fire victims are being forced to reapply for every permit with no guarantee of success, suffering from endless costs, delays and uncertainty. While fire victims throughout the world are allowed to use their insurance and quickly rebuild what they had, we are not. Many of us will never be allowed to rebuild unless the people of Maui speak up on our behalf. Lahaina as we knew it will come back very slowly, if at all.

We are a coalition of fire victims dedicated to the rapid rebuilding and recovering from the tragedy. Our mission is to share updates, engage the community, provide information, and give a voice for those who feel marginalized in the rebuilding process. Please kokua Lahaina fire victims and help us rebuild our lives as soon as possible.
